January

The second round of DCAS testing is through, & the students have made great progress. We are very excited to come down the home stretch of the school year.

In math, we are learning about area of polygons, & we are getting set to begin to delve into the world of fractions.

Language arts continues to see us learn new vocabulary words & reading skills. Please read with your child every day, it is the best way to become a better reader.

We are continuing to go deeper into the colonization of the Americas in social studies, & are learning more about electricity in science. The students really like the experiments.

Please check out our postcard page, & email me with any questions :-)

November/December

The school year is moving by so fast!  The first round of DCAS is finished, & we are plowing through a lot of information as we finish out 2011!

We have a field trip slated for December 14th, to the Delaware Museum of Natural History. This trip should be a lot of fun!

We are gearing up for the 2nd round of DCAS in early January, so when testing comes around please make sure your children are well fed & rested!

October

Welcome to October! The school year has been moving along very fast. We have finished Theme 1 in Language Arts, & have begun Theme 2. Please be on the lookout for vocabulary lists, projects & assignments that make their way home to be completed.

In math, we are moving onward to data & probability. We will be creating graphs, comparing data, & examining the probability of events.

In science, our crayfish are due to arrive on the 20th! This is always a popular section of science during the school year. The students will have a great time while learning about the structures of life.

In social studies, we will be examining events that led up to European exploration of the seas & new lands. We will begin with Marco Polo, & run straight through the more famous explorers (Christopher Columbus, Ponce de Leon), & the lesser known ones (John Cabot, Hernando Cortez).

Please call or email if you have any questions at all!

August-September; WELCOME!

Welcome to another school year at Carrie Downie. We here on the 4th grade team are very excited to begin a new learning adventure!

We have so much to learn & do, that it is important we get started as soon as possible. Therefore we are jumping in with both feet and starting math, language arts, social studies and centers on August 25.

This month’s language arts theme is “Facing Challenges”. Please make sure your child is studying his/her vocabulary words, spelling words, &  the focus skill of the week.

In math, we are realizing that just about EVERYTHING in 4th grade reverts back to multiplication. Please practice times tables with your child so he/she can become proficient. We will be starting with arrays, factors & multiples the week of August 22.

In Social Studies, we will be studying the earliest Americans and how people arrived in this country hundreds of years ago. In science, we are looking at  Structures of Life. We will be growing plants, watching seeds grow, and observing crayfish behavior.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at your convenience. I can be reached at jbonavita@colonial.k12.de.us or at 302-323-2926 x3030.

I look forward to working with your child this school year!
